Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger

Aligned with the shared principle of coming together to give back to their communities, credit unions across the state collectively participate in the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger. This signature social responsibility campaign is the largest, philanthropic fundraising effort to end hunger in our state.   The need is great.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service reports that 13.6 percent of Maine households are food insecure – a rate far higher than the national average of 11.7 percent. (Sept. 2019)   1 in 5 Maine children are considered food insecure.

Since the program’s inception in 1990, Maine credit unions have raised over $12.3 million to help end hunger. Each year, our network sets a new fundraising record, and 2022 was no different with $1,000,434.19 raised.

The Campaign’s distributions are allocated to three primary categories: local food pantries, schools, and the Good Shepherd Food Bank. 9% of the funds distributed from the Campaign in 2019 went directly to Good Shepherd Food Bank’s new Hampden Distribution Center and its Emergency Response Fund.

Through the Campaign, Seaboard FCU directly supports the following food pantries in our field of membership:

  • Bucksport Community Concerns - Bucksport
  • Greater Bay Area Ministerium Food Cupboard - Belfast
  • Island Food Pantry - Deer Isle
  • Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry - Ellsworth
  • Neighbors Supporting Neighbors Community Pantry - Hermon
  • Tree of Life - Blue Hill
